Masterclass on Makeup and Wigs Enhances Theatrical Skills at the MAVC, Malta School of Drama & Dance

As part of Opera TRAB: The Rest is Dust production, the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College, Malta School of Drama and Dance (MSDD) recently hosted the 5th Masterclass in Theatrical Makeup and Wigs, a hands-on session led by experienced makeup artist Karen Schembri Grima. With 19 children and 6 adults in attendance, the session provided valuable training in professional stage makeup techniques and wig styling, essential skills for theatrical productions.

Held in the MSDD black studio, the workshop allowed participants to explore various makeup styles used in theatre and opera, from natural enhancements to elaborate transformations for dramatic roles. Ms. Schembri Grima guided attendees through techniques tailored for stage lighting, character portrayal, and historical authenticity, ensuring they acquired practical skills applicable to live performances.

This masterclass is part of a series of specialised workshops supporting the upcoming opera TRAB: The Rest is Dust, composed by Reuben Pace with a libretto by Ġorġ Peresso. This contemporary Maltese opera explores themes of power, betrayal, and the fleeting nature of human existence, blending evocative music with a powerful narrative. The production aims to showcase Malta’s rich artistic talent while pushing creative boundaries in opera.

As part of the preparation for TRAB: The Rest is Dust, these masterclasses equip performers with essential theatrical skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for the visual and dramatic demands of the production. Throughout the series, industry professionals have shared their expertise, enhancing participants’ understanding of stagecraft and performance aesthetics.

The final masterclass in this series will take place on Thursday, 3rd April 2025, at MSDD. It will be led by renowned British opera director Michael Moxham, who will focus on Stage Direction. This session will cover key aspects of directing, including character movement, dramatic interpretation, and scene composition, providing essential insights for performers and theatre enthusiasts alike.

The MSDD masterclass series is playing a crucial role in developing Malta’s next generation of performing artists, ensuring they receive top-tier training from industry professionals. By integrating these workshops into the TRAB: The Rest is Dust project, the initiative not only enhances technical skills but also fosters artistic excellence in the local opera and theatre scene.

The opera will be premiered on 25th April at St Agatha’s Auditorium, Rabat.  Tickets can be booked free of charge from www.ticketline.com.mt
